Usain Bolt set a world record Sunday in the 100 meters at the 2009 World Track and Field Championships, winning the race in 9.58 seconds.
Bolt, the Jamaican sensation, smashed the world record of
9.69 he set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in which he took home the gold medal.
The current record is exactly one year from his his gold medal win last year.
American star Tyson Gay came in second place, setting an American record with 9.71 seconds. He eclipsed his own mark of 9.77.
Bolt’s fellow countryman Asafa Powell, who holds four of the eight fastest 100m times of all-time, finished third with 9.84.
Bolt shed more time off an existing 100-meter world record than anyone since electronic timing was introduced in 1968. He now holds the three fastest times in history.
