Pakistani officials say two people were killed Tuesday in Khyber Agency, a district bordering Afghanistan, when gunmen attacked a convoy carrying supplies for NATO troops. The convoy was attacked by at least 12 men on motorcycles as it passed a bazaar in the town of Jamrud en route to Afghanistan.
Local official Faraz Khan said one of the men killed was a driver. Three other people, including another driver and his assistant, were wounded.
Tuesday’s attack was the first on NATO supply trucks since Pakistan ended a 7 month blockade on supply routes earlier this month. The blockade was imposed on November 27, 2011 after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a NATO airstrike. NATO called the attack a “tragic unintended” incident. The ban forced NATO to use longer, more expensive routes.
Although the Taliban vowed to attack NATO convoys if the supply routes were reopened, the group has not claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack.
