The teen that died at Niagara Falls Tuesday during a police chase has been identified as Ryan Dube, an 18-year-old who had been living at the Boys and Girls Club’s Nightlight Youth Services residence in Ontario.
"The youth had been at the residence off and on since 2011, without any issues of violence. Staff report that he was well-liked by staff and residents alike, good natured and always respectful. At 18, the youth had issues with making curfew on occasion, but was moving forward toward his personal goals,” the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara said in a statement.
Police say Dube was being chased by a Niagara Regional Police officer shortly after 5 p.m. At some point during the chase, Dube and the officer fell into Niagara Gorge about 2 miles down downstream from the falls. The teen was already dead when rescuers arrived. The police officer was pulled from the gorge alive. He suffered a broken femur and was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment.
Dube’s death is under investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit. Authorities have not revealed why the teen was chased by the officer.
