Robert Novak, Famed Political Journalist, Dies of Brain Cancer

Robert Novak, the famed syndicated political columnist, died early Monday morning at age 78 after succumbing to brain cancer.

Novak, one of the most famous journalists of our time, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and that his prognosis was "dire" in August 2008. Later that month, he began writing new opinion columns for Creators Syndicate.

On February 4, Novak, known to friends as Bob, announced in his newsletter, the Evans-Novak Political Report, that the bi-weekly newsletter would be coming to an end due to his illness. The newsletter, started four years after the column, Evans-Novak Inside Report, had been published continuously since 1967.

His column, the Evans-Novak Inside Report, was the longest-running current U.S. syndicated political column, continuing for 45 years.

Novak was born in Joliet, IL and later attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1948-52. He later served in the Korean War as a U.S. Army lieutenant. Upon leaving the armed services, he worked for Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal.

In 1963, Novak teamed up with Rowland Evans to create the Evans-Novak Political Report, a newspaper column that was published six times a year. Novak continued the column after Evans' death in 2001, though the traditional Evans-Novak name continued.

The column was syndicated by his hometown Chicago Sun-Times and was considered the daily must-read for political news throughout the nation. As a television personality, he appeared on many shows for CNN, most notably three former programs, The Capital Gang, Crossfire, and Evans, Novak, Hunt, & Shields.

His death has rippled through the journalistic community, as well as the political community. He was considered a “Washington institution”.
