Chief Spokesman for Taliban in Pakistan Confirms Death of Group’s Leader Baitullah Mehsud

According to the chief spokesman for the Taliban in Pakistan the group’s leader, Baitullah Mehsud, is in fact dead, confirming earlier reports that he had been killed in a U.S. drone attack at his father-in-law’s house earlier this month.

The confirmation came shortly after Maulvi Omar was arrested by security forces while traveling to South Waziristan on Monday. According to reports local tribal elders in the village of Khawazeo in Mohmand notified the security forces of Maulvi Omar’s presence in the area.

His arrest is considered a major victory for authorities as he had been the official spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a loose organization of regional militant groups in Pakistan. Maulvi Omar is also believed to have been a senior aide of Baitullah Mehsud.
