For the first time in five years Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak is on U.S. soil, holding talks concerning the Israeli and Palestinian peace process with President Barack Obama at the White House.
Mubarak has said state din the past that Arab states would be willing to push for a lasting peace but Israel would have to freeze settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, something Israel has refused.
Obama and Mubarak each share the view that Israel must halt the expansion of settlements on occupied Palestinian lands yet Israel has maintained they are within their rights and do not appear willing to concede on the issue.
Mubarak has expressed some optimism about forging a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis, saying they were moving in the right direction.
In addition to discussing issues concerning Palestinians and Israelis, Obama has made it clear he would like to strengthen the U.S. relationship with Egypt and has remained committed to establishing a greater understanding between the two countries.
