The Texas Rangers made a move to bolster their defense behind the plate, picking up veteran catcher Ivan Rodriguez in a deal that sent a pair of minor leaguers to the Houston Astros.
Rodriguez, who played for the Rangers from 1991 to 2002, was hitting .251 with 8 homeruns and 34 RBIs and is expected to backup Taylor Teagarden. Teagarden took over everyday duties behind the plate after Jarrod Saltalamacchia went on the disabled list.
Rodriguez, winner of the 1999 AL MVP, signed as a free agent with the Astros in March and the Rangers will now pick up the remainder of his $1.5 million one-year contract.
