Sports Fan Makes Unusual Custody Request amidst Divorce

It’s not unusual for divorcing couples make special requests to have their children on holidays but a Syracuse-born man, known only as Michael, made what has to be one of the more usual requests a judge has ever faced.

Michael’s ex-wife asked to have custody of their daughter Michelle and son Liam on four major Jewish holidays and half of their Christmas vacation. He only intended to ask for child custody for one holiday besides Christmas and that is Easter.

But Michael thought her requests were unfair, “I was thinking to myself, ‘This is highly unbalanced.’ I’m not a very religious person, so I tried to think of culturally some of the other things that are important to me that I wanted to make sure I shared with my kids.”

So Michael not only requested to have custody of his children on St. Patrick’s Day, Super Bowl Sunday, okay that’s not very unusual. His third request however surprised his wife and divorce attorney.

For his third request, Michael would like to have Michelle and Liam for the NCAA championship if Syracuse is one of the two teams playing. Apparently Michael is a huge Syracuse fan and hopes to pass on the passion for his home team down to his children.

“Even though Syracuse has only won the title once and it may not happen for another 20 years, it’s something that is really important to me,” Michael said, “It’s not a holiday exactly, but it’s holy to me.”

He didn’t get any objections from his wife so his wish was granted. It’s good when parents agree on custody agreements which helps their children get through this troubling time.
