Johnson & Johnson's Depuy Orthopaedics unit. Announced it’s a panel of medical experts endorsed a hip-implant system is safe and effective. The panel's thoughts essentially translate to a recommendation that the device be approved.

Depuy is seeking approval to use the four-part device to replace hips. It is the first hip-implant system that would use ceramic-on-metal parts instead of metal-on-metal parts used in current hip replacement structures. The Company says the ceramic-on-metal parts would cut down on the amount of device wear and be better for more active patients. The device has been on the market in Europe since 2007.
