California sweep the national event, as Kevin Lau be won the Smyth Trophy for the single handed division; Kieran Chung and crew Ryan Davidson won the Bemis Trophy for the double handed division; and brothers Scott and Evan Hoffmann with crew Colleen Hackett won the Sears Cup for the triple handed division.
The Hoffmann Hackett triple handed team had one of the championship’s most impressive performances. Sailing in Rhodes 19s, a boat in which they had never set foot until this week, the Mission Bay Yacht Club sailors won the last seven races and threw out a three to take the division by 16 points.
This is the second time the Hoffmann brothers will take home the Sears Trophy. They won it in 2007 and came in second in 2008. Sharing the 2009 Sears Cup podium are Lucas Adams (Middletown, R.I.), Dylan Vogel (Jamestown, R.I.), and Sam Hallowell (Middletown, R.I.) who finished second overall, and Nathan Fast Ben Wilkinson and O.J. O’Connell who finished third.
'Once we figured out how to maneuver the boat, we felt great about our chances,' said Scott Hoffmann. 'The Rhodes 19 was a fun boat to sail, especially when the breeze came in. It was very challenging. We enjoyed it.
