In an attempt to backpedal on his controversial joke about the Aurora theater shooting that left 12 dead and 59 wounded, Dane Cook says he did not intend to “make light of what happened.”
"I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado and did not mean to make light of what happened," Cook, 40, tweeted. "I made a bad judgment call with my material last night and regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families and friends of the victims."
The joke was part of Cook’s routine at Laugh Factory in Los Angeles last Thursday. "So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie. And I don't know if you've seen the movie, but the movie is pretty much a piece of crap -- yeah, spoiler alert. I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like 'ugh f*cking shoot me,’” he said.
Several people in the audience groaned, but most clapped and laughed.
The shooting suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes, was charged Monday with 24 counts of first degree murder. For each of the 12 victims, Holmes faces one murder count for “deliberation” and one murder count for showing “extreme indifference.” He is also charged with 116 counts of attempted murder, one count of violent crime and one count of possession of explosive devices.
Holmes is accused of opening fire on moviegoers at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at Century Aurora 16 Theater in Colorado on July 20. Holmes wore tactical gear and used an AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .40-caliber handgun in the attack. A second .40-caliber handgun was also recovered at the scene. Police then discovered Holmes apartment was “booby trapped” with a sophisticated system of wires, explosives, acid, bullets and gasoline.
