Mel Gibson is back on the top of the box-office after his film “Apocalypto” opened with $14.2 million this weekend. While the opening ended the three week reign of Warner Bros. “Happy Feet” it didn’t come close to topping Gibson’s last picture, “The Passion of the Christ.” That 2004 blockbuster brought in $83.8 million its opening weekend.
Despite the films rather modest total it did mark a triumph of sorts. Reaching the top of the box-office proved that moviegoers were still willing to go to a Mel Gibson film. It was just last summer that Gibson had been arrested for driving drunk and going into an anti-Semitic rant.
“The Holiday” claimed the number two spot with $13.5 million in its opening weekend. Backed by Jude Law, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Winslet, the romantic comedy took advantage of being one of just a few films in that genre.
After holding the top spot for three weeks, “Happy Feet” fell to third with 12.7 million and pushed its total to 137.7 million at the domestic box-office. The fourth place spot was taken by “Casino Royale” with an $8.8 million haul. The Bond flick has now totaled 128.9 million in box-office sales.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly led their film “Blood Diamond” into the fifth spot with $8.5 million in its opening weekend.
