A series of attacks targeting government buildings in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad has left at least 75 people dead and more than 300 injured.
The coordinated attacks were carried out in quick succession, using trucks packed with explosives and a series of mortars. It has been less than two months since U.S. troops withdrew from cities across Iraq and now many are questioning whether Iraqi security forces are capable of preventing attacks.
Wednesday’s blasts left serious damage to Baghdad’s foreign ministry building, a building situated near the perimeter of the Green Zone, said to be the most secure area of the city. That blast shattered was blamed for a large number of deaths including ministry workers, journalists and security guards.
At least three other explosions rocked the city around the same time including a blast near the finance ministry building. While there have been no claims of responsibility for the attacks Iraqi security forces have arrested two men linked to al-Qaeda.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki had been scheduled for a news conference on Wednesday but that was cancelled after the attacks.
