After laying in state at the military college in Santiago on Monday, the body of former dictator Augusto Pinochet will be buried on Tuesday. The general, who rose to power after a violent coup in 1973, died on Sunday after suffering a heart attack last week. Pinochet was 91-years-old.
While many of the Chilean people celebrated the death of a dictator, there were still others who mourned the loss of a leader. The 17-year reign of Augusto Pinochet could be defined as a period that halted the spread of communism or a period of violent human rights violations that led to murder of thousands of Chileans.
Pinochet was never brought to trail for human rights abuses.
The funeral on Tuesday will not be attended by Michelle Bachelet, Chile’s current President. Bachelet has said there will be no official mourning and while Pinochet will be given a military funeral, he will not receive a full state funeral.
