Abdi Jeylani Marshale, a popular Somali comedian known for impersonating Islamic insurgents, was killed late Tuesday outside Kulmiye radio station in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. Police lieutenant Mohamed Gaal said Marshale was shot by at least two gunmen.
"Two men shot and seriously injured Marshale... the comedian was later pronounced dead," Gaal said.
The gunmen have not been arrested and no group has claimed responsibility for Marshale’s death. The comedian had received death threats in the past from the Al-Qaeda linked militant group al-Shabab.
"He had not done anything wrong to anybody, as far as we are concerned, but they shot him in the head and shoulders," said Kulmiye radio commentator Yusuf Keynan. "This is a black day for the entire entertainment industry, he was a leader in Somali comedy and everybody liked his performance."
Marshale was a performer and producer at the radio station.
