John Smoltz Said to be Leaning Toward Signing with Cardinals, Still Wants to Start

John Smoltz could decide where he pitches next as early as Wednesday and several reports have suggested the 42-year-old right-hander is leaning toward signing with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Smoltz was released by the Boston Red Sox on Monday after putting together a 2-5 record with an 8.32 ERA. His disappointing stay in Boston led many to predict the former NL Cy Young Award winner would retire but he now appears ready to don a Cardinals jersey.

It remains unclear in what Smoltz’s role on the club would be but St. Louis apparently wants him as a set-up man for closer Ryan Franklin. Smoltz has expressed hope that he could be used as a starter but his difficulties in Boston have left several teams suspect.

Smoltz was also being courted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins and Texas Rangers but St. Louis seems to be the best fit for the future Hall of Famer.
