Don Hewitt, who created 60 Minutes in 1968 and produced
the first televised debate between U.S. presidential candidates, has died.
Hewitt died Wednesday in his New York home. He had reportedly been battling
pancreatic cancer. Hewitt was 86.
Hewitt began working at CBS News in 1948. He became the head
of the network’s nightly half-hour broadcast with Walter Cronkite in 1963 and
later created 60 Minutes, which is still on the air today. Hewitt stepped down
from the program in 2004. In 1960, Hewitt directed and produced the first televised
debate between two presidential candidates – John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.
Hewitt is survived by his wife, Marilyn Berger, and four
children.
