John Smoltz, the 1996 NL Cy Young Award winner, has bounced back from his recent release from the Boston Red Sox and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Smoltz, 42, was released by the Sox on Monday after putting together a 2-5 mark with an 8.32 ERA. Despite his rough ride with Boston there were several teams interested in the right-hander including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins.
While Smoltz has said he would like to remain a starter the Cardinals will likely use him out of the bullpen as a setup man for Ryan Franklin.
Smoltz is expected to join the Cardinals on Thursday.
