While Rex Grossman didn’t exactly have Drew Brees type numbers he did succeed in leading the Chicago Bears (11-2) past the St. Louis Rams (5-8) 42-27. Grossman passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns and most importantly committed no turnovers.
The Bears continued to find points from unconventional sources as Devin Hester returned to kickoffs back for touchdowns. With the Bears trailing 6-0 in the second quarter Hester returned his first kickoff 94-yards to give the Bears a 7-6 lead.
The Rams answered Hester’s return with a 72-yard drive capped by Steven Jackson’s 2-yard plunge and St. Louis grabbed a 13-6 advantage.
Grossman then found his stride leading them on a 74-yard drive to give them a 14-13 lead at halftime. The Bears quarterback hit Bernard Berrian on a 39-yard touchdown pass and Chicago never trailed after the score.
Chicago then put another 14 points on the board in the third quarter after Thomas Jones rushed for a 30-yard touchdown and Muhsin Muhammad caught a 14-yard touchdown touchdown pass from Grossman.
The 28-13 lead was extended in the fourth quarter when Adrian Peterson finished off a 9 play 55 yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown and a 35-13 score.
Marc Bulger tried to bring the Rams back as he connected with Tory Holt on a 6-yard touchdown pass to get within two scores of the Bears. That hope was short lived as Devin Hester returned the ensuing kickoff 96-yards for his second touchdown and inflated the score to 42-20. Hester returned four kick offs on the night for 225 yards, and a punt return for 21 yards.
St. Louis found the end zone one more time with Marc Bulger’s third touchdown pass of the game, a 6-yard touchdown toss to Steven Jackson. Bulger finished with 354 yards passing.
The win clinched a first round bye for the Chicago Bears while St. Louis saw their playoff hopes slip away.
