Drug Rehab Shares Growing Concerns about Prescription Drug Abuse

A recent spike in media attention to Prescription Drug Abuse has led many to take a closer look at what Doctors and addicts are doing to circumvent the law and procedure.  If we take an honest look at how serious and imbedded in society this problem is, we can clearly see that this problem has been around for quite some time. It is only recently that people have really begun to take notice. Celebrities and prescription drugs have been synonymous as far back as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. Fast forward to today and the doctors are gaining notoriety. Doctor Conrad Murray, who was serving as Michael Jacksons personal physician is under close scrutiny for allegedly administering the drug Propofol for the treatment of insomnia.

In many cases of prescription drug abuse, the addict will not be honest with the doctor and in other cases the doctor will not ask enough questions before prescribing these powerful drugs. There are several methods used by addicts to obtain the prescriptions that they desire. One of the more prevalent methods for acquiring the drugs is known as “Doctor Shopping”, which is essentially the addict calling several doctors (often targeting dentists) until one of the doctors prescribes the medication that they desire.

This type of addiction can be very difficult to spot because of the ability of the addict to “fly under the radar” avoiding detection by employers and family members drug tests by providing a valid prescription for the medications that they are abusing. This type of addiction is no different than being addicted to heroin or cocaine in that the body reacts in the same way when it does not get the drugs that it has become accustomed to getting. These symptoms include severe physical, mental and emotional cravings for the drug as well as physical manifestations such as fever, trembling, nausea as well as a host of other symptoms depending on the drugs that are being abused.

There is hope for all persons suffering from addiction to prescription drugs. That hope comes in the form of  intermediate and long term drug addiction treatment. This type of treatment has been proven very effective in giving the suffering addict a new lease on life and all it has to offer.
