The Washington Capitols (13-10-7) built a 4-0 lead mid way through the second period but surrendered four straight goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins (13-11-5) and lost in a shootout 5-4. Evgeni Malkin knotted the score at 4-4 in the third, scored a goal in the shootout and had an assist while Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Chris Clark had two goals and an assist for the Capitols while Alexander Ovechkin added two assists in the loss.
The Colorado Avalanche (14-14-2) scored their final three goals via the power play and beat the Carolina Hurricanes (15-13-4) 5-2. The Avalanche scored four goals in the third period to grab the win. Andrew Brunette scored in the third and added two assists in the deciding period. Joe Sakic equaled the feat with a goal and two assists in the third. Justin Williams scored both goals for the Hurricanes.
Vesa Toskala stopped all 23 shots he faced for his third shutout as the San Jose Sharks (22-9-0) blanked the Phoenix Coyotes (11-17-1) 4-0. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau each had three assists for the Sharks and the San Jose goals came from Milan Michalek, Steve Bernier, Joe Pavelski, and Curtis Brown.
