Usain Bolt Reaches 200M Final in 2009 World Track & Field Championships

Usain Bolt reached the 200 meters final in the 2009 World Track & Field Championships on Wednesday.

Bolt set the world record for the 100 meters on Sunday, winning the event in 9.58 seconds.

Bolt is currently the world record holder with 19.30 seconds and can easily break Tyson Gay’s World Championships record of 19.76. Defending champion Gay is injured and out of the 200.

Bolt is looking to help Jamaica gain a 3-0 edge on the United States in the sprint events, coming close to mirroring the 5-0 edge they had over the U.S. in the 2008 Olympics.

Defending 200-meter champion Allyson Felix will face off with Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica in the 200 meters. American sprinter Marshevet Hooker had the fastest qualifying time of 22.51 in the event.

The United States will be looking for gold in the 100 hurdles, with Olympic champion Dawn Harper and teammate Damu Cherry favored to medal, and in the men's 1,500, where defending champion Bernard Lagat is set to race later Wednesday.

So far, the Americans have three golds and seven medals overall, ahead of Russia with two golds and seven total. Jamaica has two golds and five medals overall.

Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt and defending champion Jeremy Wariner will face off for the U.S. for another gold in Friday's 400 final.
