Washington County, IA- A livestock auction turned into chaos Monday morning after an out-of-control truck plowed into a a crowd, killing one person and injuring five others.
There were an estimated 700 people at the Kolana Sales Barn where they were conducting a horse auction. One auctioneer, a clerk and several others who were running the auction were working in the back of a truck.
While driving from one trailer to the next, the driver of the truck experienced a medical event, causing him to hit the accelerator and lose control of the vehicle. Several people in the bed of the truck were thrown out before it plowed into a crowd of several people in the parking lot outside of the barn.
After traveling through the parking lot, the truck slammed into a tree, then continued through downtown Kalona for a block before coming to rest.
Police confirmed that one person died, but they did not release their name, pending notification of the next of kin.
The people thrown from the truck mostly suffered cuts and abrasions. Five of those struck in the traffic collision were taken to a local hospital, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.
Auto accident injuries can lead to exorbitant medical costs, and those who are injured may not have enough insurance to cover their bills. Not only do they have to struggle with paying for their medical care, they also have the added stress of covering their daily expenses.
In many instances, injury victims can turn to an accident attorney to get the compensation they need and deserve. A legal expert can file a lawsuit or negotiate with an insurance company to make sure their clients get a beneficial settlement.
