New York authorities are still trying to determine the cause of death for a woman who was found floating in Carmel’s Lake Gleneida with a young girl clinging to her body and crying for help. The woman has been identified as 59-year-old Brewster resident Pamela Kaner. An autopsy will be performed to determine if Kaner drowned.
The 6-year-old girl clinging to Kaner’s body was rescued by three people fishing in the lake around 5 p.m. Monday. Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson the child was not injured, but was taken to a nearby hospital. Kaner’s body was recovered from the lake by firefighters.
Kaner has been described as a friend of the girl’s family. The girl told police she and Kaner were wading near the shore when something happened to Kaner.
“We are saddened by the tragedy that occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland.
