A shooting at a church in central Nigeria Monday night left at least 19 people dead and an unknown number wounded. The Islamic militant group Boko Haram is thought to be behind the attack as they have carried out similar attacks in the past. Two months ago, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for killing 50 people at three different churches.
Military officials say around 10 men armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles arrived at Deeper Life Bible Church in Okene, Kogi state in a bus. They blocked entrances to the building and opened fire on worshipers gathered for the evening service. Local authorities say the shooting lasted around 20 minutes. At least fifteen people died at the scene, including the pastor of the church.
The majority of the wounded were rushed to a hospital in Lokoja. Authorities fear the death toll will rise as many of the wounded are in critical condition.
