Afghan President Hamid Karzai Says Afghanistan Elections Were Success

Afghan President Hamid Karzai characterized the country’s election as a success on Thursday after the polls went peacefully.

Karzai hailed Afghans for braving Taliban "bombs and intimidations". His praise was echoed by the US and NATO.

There were 17 million eligible voters, who chose between 3,000 candidates for 420 seats in provincial councils. There were 300,000 troops on patrol (including 100,000 foreign troops) and 250,000 observers and journalists covering the event.

The official preliminary results not expected until September 2, but there may be earlier indications.

Opinion polls put support for Hamid Karzai, one of 30 candidates, at about 45%, with his former Foreign Minister, Abdullah Abdullah, in second place with 25%, according to BBC.

His other two main opponents are the independent candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and ex-World Bank official Ramazan Bashardost.
