Sober companions spend inordinate amounts of time with people who are new in recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction. Many drug rehabs and alcohol treatment centers offer services that connect their patients with sober companions.
The sober companion’s role is to stay by the side of a newly recovering addict or alcoholic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Often, this companionship lasts for weeks or even months. The sober companion becomes a "buddy" for hire to the recovering person who may be feeling apprehensive about losing all of his or her old using friends for a new life that is substance free.
Drug rehabs and alcohol treatment centers know that, for the most part, addicts and alcoholics are extremely insecure when they first begin recovery. Therefore, it may be awkward or even emotionally painful for them to reach out to anyone for help. Hiring a sober companion eliminates these feelings, and a contractual relationship is formed.
Sober companions are also available to assist clients who need someone to help them get from their home to a drug rehab or alcohol treatment center, safely. Often, when someone decides to go to an alcohol treatment center or drug rehab, they are intoxicated. A sober companion can assist these individuals by assuring them that no matter how drunk or high they get traveling, they will arrive at their rehab facility safely. Of course, the sober companion monitors the addict to make sure that he or she is not going to overdose.
