Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his main political rival former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah have each claimed victory in Thursday’s presidential election. Both men have said they earned a majority vote, eliminating the need for a second round of balloting.
Electoral officials have said the counting has been completed and an announcement will be made shortly. The counting was completed in short order after a lower than expected number of voters cast ballots, an indication that threats of election violence from the Taliban influenced the polls.
According to the Independent Election Commission at least 11 people were killed during Thursday’s polling. In addition to the violence there were also reports of ballot box tampering and voter fraud, something Abdullah complained to electoral officials about.
Results of the presidential election could be announced within a few days but officials have called for patience during the process. The election could head into a second round of none of the candidates secured at least a 50 percent majority.
