Dreamgirls, The Good German, and Charlotte’s Web, Look to Knock Off Apocalypto at Weekend Box-Office

Mel Gibson will be facing a tough fight this weekend as his film Apocalypto will be going up against some strong newcomers. Gibson’s tale of the days leading up to the end of the Mayan empire may have to do more than its $15 million opening weekend to hold on to the top spot. While Apocalypto was able to unseat the juggernaut Happy Feet this weekend could prove to be a greater test.

Gibson will have to contend with the DreamWorks/Paramount film Dreamgirls starring Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Hudson. Fresh off its five Golden Globe Awards nominations, Dreamgirls looks to capitalize on the recent buzz surrounding the performances of Knowles and the return of Eddie Murphy. Beyonce was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy while Hudson was nominated for Supporting Actress in the same category. Murphy is up for Supporting Actor as well.

Charlotte’s Web hits theaters this weekend as well. With a shortage of children’s films out there and the presence of Julia Roberts and Dakota Fanning, the E.B. White classic, Charlotte’s Web could attract enough of an audience to take the top spot.

George Clooney and Cate Blanchette are back on the screen in The Good German. Directed by Steven Soderbergh the film is shot entirely in black and white and set in post WW II Berlin. Clooney’s character is assigned to cover the Potsdam conference between Churchill, Stalin, and Truman and while there tries to track down an old love interest played by Cate Blanchette.
