Rockingham County, VA- An early morning traffic collision between a tractor-trailer and a New York bus sent seven people to the hospital with the truck driver facing reckless driving charges.
The accident took place in the northbound lanes of I-81 around 4 a.m. According to Virginia State Police, the tractor-trailer was in the right lane of I-81 when the driver attempted to change into the left lane. A commercial passenger was in the left lane and the truck crashed into it. The impact pushed both vehicles onto the median where the cab of the tractor-trailer overturned. The bus remained upright.
The tractor-trailer came to rest against the bus door so passengers were forced to exit through emergency windows in the back.
There were a total of 40 passengers on the bus, but only five incurred minor injuries. Both the bus and tractor-trailer driver were injured. The bus driver had serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The crash causes the closure of all lanes of I-81 in both directions until 8:30 a.m.
The truck driver, Dean Crawford, 29, was charged with reckless driving.
Although many vehicles now have enhanced safety features, our roads are still dangerous with fatal accidents showing a slight increase. Luckily, no fatalities resulted from this accident, but the injury victims will still have medical bills to deal, especially the bus driver.
An accident attorney will work on behalf of the injured and get them the settlement they deserve for their pain and suffering.
