New York Mayor Bloomberg Urges Romney and Obama to Address Immigration Reform

New York, NY- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging both Presidential candidates to address the issue of immigration reform in their election campaigns.

Bloomberg wrote an opinion piece on his official website which discusses the important role immigrants play in America’s financial future.

A story appearing in today’s edition of Bloomberg News details the economic impact immigrants have on our economic future. According to the report, immigrant-owned businesses contribute $775 billion to the economy. One out of ten American workers are employed by immigrants.

Additionally, a Standard’s and Poor study showed that communities with a large immigrant populations experienced increases in their per capita income, tax revenue and have higher credit ratings.

Immigration reform is a very contentious issue and tackling the problem seems daunting as both parties disagree on how to reform the system. And few political leaders aren’t presenting any ideas on how to fundamentally improve the system.

The most recent proposed change, the DREAM Act was shot down by the House in 2010, because they believed it was backdoor amnesty. President Obama recently used prosecutorial discretion to stop deportations of young immigrants, who were brought into the country illegally by their parents. Starting tomorrow these young people can apply for visas, a process that can be simplified with an immigration attorney.

The changes Mayor Bloomberg proposes include increase the number of available skilled work visas and allow more temporary work visas for farm-workers, along with other suggestions.

Since both parties seem to disagree on how to reform the immigration system they are reticent to tackle to problem.
