India has announced they will be importing food to combat a devastating drought that has affected nearly half the country’s districts.
An estimated 700 million people are facing food shortages due to a monsoon season that hasn’t produced enough rain to sustain the crops of farmers. According to farm minister Sharad Pawar, “The situation is grim, not just for the crop sowing and the crop health but also for sustaining animal health, providing drinking water, livelihood and food, particularly for the small and marginal farmers and landless laborers.”
The lack of rain has left crops like cotton, rice, soybean and sugarcane in short supply and has led to price increases. India’s finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, would not say what would be imported or when saying he wanted to avoid speculation on the prices of those products.
