Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has promised to provide compensation to the relatives of victims in Monday’s hydro-electric power plant explosion that left 48 dead and another 28 remain missing and presumed dead.
Putin toured the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant in Siberia on Friday and vowed to give relatives $30,000 as compensation.
Rescue crews are still searching through the flooded turbine hall where many of the workers were stationed when the explosion occurred. It remains unclear what caused the explosion but early reports have said a transformer blew during repairs which then destroyed three generators.
While the rescue efforts continue there is little hope of actually finding any survivors as the waters that flooded the turbine hall are from the near-freezing Yenisei river.
