Matt Stafford, the number one selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, will be starting on Saturday when his Detroit Lions take on the Cleveland Browns.
While Stafford will get the start Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has shied away from using the term “starter,” opting to say the rookie will “begin the game.” According to Schwartz, the term starter “has a different connotation” and “we don’t have any starters right now.”
Daunte Culpepper “began the game” in the Lions preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons last week with Stafford coming on in the second quarter. In his debut the former Georgia Bulldogs standout was 7-of-14 for 114 yards and a touchdown.
