Taliban Claims Responsibility For Deadly Helicopter Crash In Afghanistan

Although the Taliban has claimed responsibility for a deadly helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan, officials with NATO’s International Security Assistance Force say the cause of the crash remains unknown. Seven Americans soldiers, three Afhgan soldiers and one translator died in the crash.

The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was reportedly on patrol went it went down in Kandahar province around 10 a.m. Thursday. Coalition forces located and secured the crash site in the Chinarto area of Shah Wali Kot district. Coalition spokesman U.S. Army Maj. Adam Wojack said the soldiers exchanged fire with insurgents.

"There was some enemy contact, insurgent fire at the site of the crash, about two hours after the crash. [The coalition] had already secured the site of the crash, returned fire and neutralized the threat," Maj. Wojack said.

No other details on the crash were immediately available.
