A large cache of rifles, ammunition, rocket launchers and gunboats were turned over by the Nigerian militant group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta as part of a government amnesty program aimed at bringing peace to the volatile region.
Top commander of the militant group, Ebikabowei Victor Ben, also known as General Boyloaf,, had met with Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua and agreed to accept the government’s offer of amnesty. The weapons handover was made during a ceremony in Yenagoa near Port Harcourt.
While much has been made about the weapons handover it remains unclear whether it was the entire stock of weapons owned by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.
The group has been involved in several attacks on oil fields in the Niger Delta, attacks that have been carried out because the militants claim the proceeds from the oil production does not benefit the region.
