Wildfires Near Greek Capital of Athens Burning Out of Control

Wildfires just outside the Greek city of Athens continue to burn out of control as a number of firefighters battle to contain the blazes that now threaten homes and buildings in the towns of Grammatiko and Varnavas, just northeast of the capital.

Officials have said gale-force winds have made the flames unpredictable, making it more difficult to contain. While there have been no casualties reported the fires continue to strengthen as they burn through the heavily forested areas.

On Saturday morning the fires were heading toward the town of Marathon and with many residents refusing to leave their homes firefighters are having a an even more difficult time halting the flames progress.
