Taiwan Begins Three Days of Mourning for Victims of Typhoon Morakot

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou attended a number of memorial services on Saturday as the country begins three days of mourning for the people who were killed in Typhoon Morakot earlier this month.

 

Morakot, the worst typhoon to hit Taiwan in 50 years, has been blamed for at least 160 deaths but more than 500 people remain missing and are feared dead. The deadly storm caused massive flooding and mudslides, completely wiping out the village of Hsiaolin were the majority of deaths occurred.

 

President Ma has apologized for the government’s slow response to the devastation and has vowed to push forward with a program of reconstruction and resettlement
