Bob Knight Moves within One Win of Dean Smith as Texas Tech beats Arkansas 71-56.

Bob Knight collected win number 878 on Saturday after his Texas Tech (9-3) squad knocked off Arkansas (8-2) 71-56.

The Red Raiders used an 18-0 first-half burst to move their fiery head coach one step closer to Dean Smith’s all-time wins record. After the game Knight seemed to downplay the imminent achievement when talking to reporters, “Doesn't mean anything to me, it means I've coached a long time. You guys think too much about records.”

Knight’s 878th career victory came compliments of his team’s ability to play both ends of the court. Offensively the Red Raiders shot 54 percent from the field and had strong performances from Charlie Burgess (19 points), Martin Zeno (17 points), and Jarrius Jackson (17 points). Defensively Texas Tech took away the inside game of the Razorbacks and forced them to shoot from the perimeter, a task they were not up to meet.

As a team Arkansas shot just 3-21 from beyond the arch and turned the ball over 18 times. Arkansas’ first basket of the game was a 3-pointer but they struggled the rest of the way.

Bob Knight could tie North Carolina’s legendary Smith on Dec. 23 when Texas Tech takes on Bucknell. The Red Raiders will then take on UNLV on the 28th of December.
