Yemeni Troops Launch Offensive Against Shia Rebels, Claim More than 100 Militants Killed

Yemeni troops using air strikes, artillery and tanks launched a massive offensive against Shia rebels in the north of the country over the weekend, killing at least 100 militants according to the military.

The military offensive was aimed at recapturing the town of Harf Sufyan which had been under the rebels’ control. Those rebels, said to be part of the Zaidi Shia sect, have been fighting to restore Shia rule in the north of Yemen, an act the government sees as an attempt to overthrow the current leadership.

While there has been no confirmation as to the total number dead the military has said two Shia rebel leaders, Mohsen Saleh Gawd and Salah Jorman, were killed in the operation.
