The wildfires that scorched towns northeast of Athens on Friday and Saturday have now forced an entire suburb of the Greek capital to evacuate as the blazes continue to rage out of control.
At least 10,000 residents of Agios Stefanos, about 14 miles northeast of Athens, were ordered to leave their homes after officials warned the unpredictable winds could quickly turn the situation into more than just an environmental disaster.
The fires began on Friday evening in Grammatiko and quickly burned through the heavily forested area as it made its way towards Athens. On Saturday the flames reached Varnavas and by Sunday morning the suburbs of Drafi, Pikermi and Pallini fell victim.
Already three of the four mountains that surround Athens have been stripped of their trees and any further destruction could lead to what governor Yiannis Sgouros described as “an ecological disaster.”
