Press, who joined the company from Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) two years ago, is leaving to pursue other interests, according to three people familiar with his plans. One of the people said Press plans to leave by late November or early December. Chrysler in an e-mailed statement declined to comment.

Fiat SpA runs Chrysler Group after the American automaker emerged from bankruptcy in June. Press has no one reporting to him and has been assisting Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne with the management transition, the people said. Press serves as a special adviser to Marchionne, who is also CEO of Fiat.

Chrysler hired Press as president in September 2007, a month after Cerberus Capital Management LP bought the company from Daimler AG

Before the bankruptcy reorganization, Press and Tom LaSorda were presidents of the automaker and Robert Nardelli was CEO. LaSorda retired in May and Nardelli resigned in June.
