Scores from NFL Week 15
The Baltimore Ravens (11-3) held the Cleveland Browns (4-10) to just 68 yards rushing and 236 yards of total offense in their 27-17 win. The victory guaranteed the Ravens a playoff birth. Jamal Lewis rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown while Kyle Boller threw for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns. Boller filled in for Steve McNair who was injured early in the game. Demetrius Williams caught two passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. The Ravens defense collected six sacks and picked off Browns quarterback Derek Anderson twice.
Ladell Betts rushed for 119 yards and Jason Campbell threw for 204 yards and a touchdown as the Washington Redskins (5-9) beat the New Orleans Saints (9-5) 16-10. Despite the loss the Saints secured a playoff birth. Drew Brees was held in check by the Redskins, the Saints quarterback threw for 207 yards and was intercepted once. Shaun Suisham kicked three field goals for Washington.
The Pittsburgh Steelers (7-7) held the Carolina Panthers (6-8) to 43 yards on the ground and forced two turnovers in their 37-3 rout. Pittsburgh scored 17 points in the second quarter to hold a 17-3 lead at halftime and then scored 10 points in the third and fourth. Willie Parker broke off a 45 yard touchdown run and Santonio Holmes returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown for Pittsburgh. The Steelers defense sacked Carolina’s quarterback five times on the day.
Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals and Tom Brady passed for 2 touchdowns as the New England Patriots (10-4) blasted the Houston Texans (4-10) 40-7. Coming off their embarrassing shutout against Miami last week the Patriots didn’t waste any time jumping on the Texans. By halftime New England was on top 27-0. Brady threw for just 109 yards and 44 of those were on a touchdown pass to Kevin Faulk. Houston’s only touchdown came on a 1 yard run from Ron Dayne. New England responded on the ensuing kickoff with a 93 yard return for a touchdown by Ellis Hobbs. The Patriots intercepted David Carr four times on the day.
The New York Jets (8-6) kept their playoff hopes alive with their 26-13 victory over the Minnesota Vikings (6-8). The Vikings jumped to a 7-0 lead but the Jets responded with 26 unanswered points of their own. Chad Pennington threw for 339 yards and a touchdown and Laveranues Coles had 144 yards receiving and a touchdown in the win. Mike Nugent kicked four field goals, three of them in the second quarter, for the Jets. The two teams combined for only 130 yards rushing, the Jets managed 68 yards on the ground.
Vernand Morency had touchdown runs of 14 yards and 21 yards and the Green Bay Packers (6-8) beat the Detroit Lions (2-12) 17-9. The Packers defense held the Lions to 142 yards of total offense, picked off Jon Kitna twice, and sacked him six times. Brett Favre threw for 174 yards for the Packers but he was intercepted three times. Ahman Green rushed for 79 yards for Green Bay. Jason Hanson was responsible for all of the Lions points, kicking three field goals. Favre broke the Dan Marino’s NFL all-time completions record during the game.
The Tennessee Titans (7-7) returned two interceptions for a touchdown and recovered a fumble for a touchdown in their 24-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars (8-6). Adam Jones put the Titans on the board in the first quarter when he returned a David Garrard interception 83 yards for a touchdown. In the third quarter Cortland Finnegan picked up a fumble and scampered 92 yards for another Titans touchdown. Chris hope then gave Tennessee a 24-10 lead after returning a Garrard interception 61 yards for a touchdown. The Jacksonville offense dominated the stats but their four turnovers were the story of the game. The Jaguars totaled 396 yards of offense while the Titans managed only 98. Jacksonville rushed for 202 yards, the Titans could only gain 41 yards on the ground. Even more surprising, Jacksonville held a 44:22/15:38 time of possession advantage and still lost.
Robbie Gould kicked a 25 yard field goal in overtime to lift the Chicago Bears (12-2) over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-11) 34-31. The Bears held a 14 point lead midway through the fourth quarter but allowed the Buccaneers two score on two long touchdown passes to force overtime. Rex Grossman once again played errorless football throwing for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Desmond Clark caught both of the Grossman touchdown passes and totaled 125 yards receiving. The Bears offense racked up 446 yards of total offense while their defense held the Tampa running game in check allowing just 57 yards on the ground.
A week after blanking New England the Miami Dolphins (6-8) were on the receiving end of a 21-0 pounding by the Buffalo Bills (7-7). J.P. Losman passed for 200 yards and three touchdowns to get the Bills back to .500 on the season. All three of Losman’s touchdowns were for 21 yards or more. Losman hit Robert Royal on a 33 yard touchdown in the second, Josh Reed on a 27 yard touchdown in the thrid, and Lee Evans on a 21 yard touchdown in the fourth. Joey Harrington had a brutal game for the Dolphins throwing for just 20 yards on 5/17 passing. He was picked off twice as well.
The Philadelphia Eagles (8-6) scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to beat the New York Giants (7-7) 36-22. Brian Westbrook rushed for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns and Jeff Garcia passed for 237 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles win. Eli Manning threw for 282 yards but was picked off twice. One of Manning’s interceptions was returned 19 yards for a touchdown by Reggie Brown. The Giants committed four turnovers in the game. Tiki Barber rushed for 75 yards and scored a touchdown for the Giants. Plaxico Burress had 120 yards receiving for N.Y. but couldn’t find the end zone.
Jay Cutler threw for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Denver Broncos (8-6) kept their playoff hopes alive, beating the Arizona Cardinals (4-10) 37-20. Mike Bell rushed for two touchdowns for the Broncos and Javon Walker had 84 yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals were just 4-12 on third downs and Matt Leinart was picked off twice in the loss. Edgerrin James rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown for Arizona.
The Oakland Raiders (2-12) turned the ball over five times in their 20-0 loss at home to the St. Louis Rams (6-8). Steven Jackson rushed for 137 yards for the Rams and scored two touchdowns. The Raiders collected just 57 yards on the ground. Andrew Walter was picked off twice and Aaron Brooks was intercepted once in the loss.
