The Midas touch of Will Smith worked once again as his new movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” struck box-office gold over the weekend. It is a telling story of a man who is struggling to recognize his dreams of financial success while maintaining a relationship with his son. The movie is based on a true story set in San Francisco in 1981, a time when capitalism and excess became a pervading ideal for society. The movie brought in $27 million over the weekend to make it the number one draw at the box-office.
Christopher Paolini inspired the creation of the weekends number two movie "Eragon". The adventure flick took in $23.45 million surprising most people. Combining sorcery, dragons and wizardry the Fox flick attracted a large audience faithful to the book penned by Paolini.
The children’s classic “Charlotte’s Web” finished a disappointing third with $12 million at the box-office. Many experts attribute the low total to Christmas shopping and believe that the Dakota Fanning and Julia Roberts will draw moviegoers in the coming weeks. Based on the E.B. White book, “Charlotte’s Web” also features the voices of Oprah and Steve Buscemi.
"Happy Feet" continued to draw the crowds bringing in an additional $8.5 million to finish number four and push its five week total to $149.4 million. "The Holiday" took the number five spot with $8.2 million.
Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” held strong at number six with $7.7 million to push its 10-day total to $27.9 million.
