The NBA handed out suspensions for players involved in Saturday night’s brawl between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks and Carmelo Anthony was handed the stiffest penalty.
This season’s leading scorer picked up a 15-game suspension for punching Knicks guard Mardy Collins.
The fight broke out after Mardy Collins committed a hard foul on Denver’s J.R. Smith with just over a minute remaining in the Nuggets 123-100 blowout win. After the foul occurred Nate Robinson rushed into the mix and things escalated.
Both Nate Robinson and J.R. Smith were given 10-game suspensions for their actions in the melee. Collins was suspended six games while teammate Jared Jefferies was handed a four game suspension. Jeffries tried in vain to catch Carmelo Anthony after he punched Collins.
The Knicks will lose the eservices of Jerome James for one game for leaving the bench during the brawl while the Nuggets Nene Hilario received the same punishment.
NBA Commissioner David Stern fined each organization $500,000 for the fight.
Speaking about the incident Stern said “I was very disappointed, clearly, we're not getting through or players in certain circumstances just don't want to be restrained. I would suggest that those players will not have long careers in the NBA.”
