Los Angeles, CA- An early morning collision between a Metro line bus and a transit train left 48 people injured. Though the LAPD says it was a minor collision with no one suffering major injuries.
There were over 60 people on the bus and 200 people on the train, but the majority of injuries were incurred by the bus occupants, KTLA reported
The collision took place on the 51 line at San Pedro Street and Washington Ave. The impact was strong enough to send the bus slamming into a traffic signal, knocking it over.
Most of the injuries minor, with the majority of passengers complaining of back and knee pain. The injured were taken to nine different local hospitals.
The bus sustained major damage, but fortunately the train did not derail.
“The incident was every paramedic’s worst nightmare – a traffic collision between mass transit vehicles, Brian Humphrey of LA Fire Department told the Los Angeles Times, “Thankfully, LAFD responders were able to rely on their training in what proved to be a minor collision.”
The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
According to the Huffington Post this was the third mass transit accident in downtown LA this year.
The people in this accident were fortunate to not have incurred more serious injuries. The numbers of traffic fatalities and injuries have increased slightly over the past couple of years. The increase in fatalities should be a warning to drivers and encourage them to be defensive drivers.
