Russian Prosecutors Accuse Ukraine of Fighting Alongside Georgian Troops During Last Year’s Conflict

The already tempestuous relationship between Russia and the Ukraine could become even worse after Russian prosecutors have alleged Ukrainian troops fought alongside Georgian forces in last year’s conflict over South Ossetia.

According to Moscow prosecutors the Georgian troops were aided by regular soldiers as well as 200 members of a Ukrainian nationalist group. In a statement released by the Russian prosecutor general’s office details of the accusations stated “Soldiers from Ukraine's regular defense ministry detachments and at least 200 members of the UNA-UNSO nationalist organization took part in the armed aggression against South Ossetia.”

Georgia had been fighting to regain control of the breakaway region of South Ossetia but Russia stepped in and defended the territory, declaring it had the right to stand on its own. During the brief conflict Russia claimed to have recovered several Ukrainian anti-aircraft weapons as well as captured several pictures of soldiers wearing Ukrainian uniforms.

Ukraine has denied the Russian accusations but that has done little to convince the prosecutors.
