Southern Company SO, Southern Apprehension on behalf of the background is not a fad
Southern Company SO
For more than a quarter century, Joel Babbit has been in and out of the highlight in Atlanta as an ad executive, marketer and businessman with a knack for keeping things off-balance and cashing in.As a partner in the firm Babbit & Reiman during the 1980s, he rocked the staid ad community by wooing away clients then launching contemptible campaigns.
As the city’s chief marketing officer under Mayor Maynard Jackson in the early ’90s, he proposed selling corporate sponsorships to city streets and painting logos on stray dogs.
Then, last January, Babbit, performed his imitation of Time-Life legend Henry Luce, who launched Fortune magazine in the depths of the Depression. With partner Chuck Leavell the keyboardist for the Rolling Stones Babbit launched Mother Nature Network, an environmental news Web site, in the middle of a deep recession. And he claims the site was profitable from day one.
