A 100 year-old man ran into a group of children outside their elementary school across the street from his home, injuring 11 children and 3 adults.
The driver Preston Carter began to pull out of his driveway and plowed into the group gathered in front of Main Street Elementary School. One witness on the scene said that bystanders to scream and bang on his windows to get Carter to stop.
Alma Solache told the Associated Press, “He was not paying attention,” it took several seconds for him to stop before the children could be pulled out from under the car.
Carter alleges that his brakes failed, but it will take police weeks to determine if that was a factor in the accident. They impounded his vehicle in order to conduct their investigation.
Two of the children were in critical condition but were upgraded to serious condition today. None of the fourteen injuries was life- threatening. Carter, who has a valid driver’s license, was not arrested.
He expressed concern over the accident, “You know I’m sorry about that. I wouldn’t do that for nothing on earth. My sympathies for them.”
It is a tragedy, but fortunately no one lost their life. So many traffic accidents, caused by negligent and impaired drivers, end with serious injuries, property damage and costly medical bills.
Fatal pedestrian accidents have increased slightly this year, but streets are safer that they were decades ago. But people still make mistakes and when they injure others, an accident attorney will make sure they are held accountable.
