Jim Grobe was awarded the AP Coach of the Year honors after leading Wake Forest to their best season in its 105-year football history.
After finishing last in the ACC last year Grobe turned the Wake program around and led his team to an 11-2 record and an ACC title. It was the school’s first ACC title in 36 years and earned them a birth into the Orange Bowl.
The Demon Deacons got off to an ominous start losing their starting quarterback, Ben Mauck, in the season opener and starting tailback Micah Andrews two weeks later. Grobe was forced to revamp his offense and simplify his attack. It was a recipe that led to a perfect 6-0 road record and a birth into a BCS bowl.
Grobe produced back-to-back winning seasons his first two years at Wake but the last three years they had fallen on hard times. His sixth season proved to be magical as he collected 39 of the 65 first place votes from the AP Top 25 voters.
Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano finished second in the voting with 12votes.
